anyone have tips for beginners learning how to play racquetball?
Posted under Diet & Fitness by AdministratorME g asked:
we play at the YMCA, and just started playing racquetball. Its myself and 2 kids 14, and 8 yrs old. we have the glasses and rackets and correct balls to use. We basically have just been hitting the wall but would like to learn how to really play.
Also how many calories can you burn from playing? Especially when eating properly now and drinking water, really working hard on losing weight.

Sure. If possible, you’re better off playing one-on-one and not all 3 at the same time (called ‘cutthroat’… don’t tell the kids). I am assuming you know the basic racquetball rules. I think the best goal to start with is getting to a good position to hit the ball. (This will also be helpful in the losing weight area.) Think about the way a baseball player stands in the batter box. He has a strike zone that goes from the bottom of his knees to his waist or so. In racquetball, the best place to hit the ball well is right around the knees with a similar kind of stance. When you are just getting started in racquetball, it will take a little time to learn how the ball bounces and how to anticipate where you need to stand to hit it. But if you work on getting to the right position, things will click a lot faster.
The number of calories you burn will be directly related to how ‘intense’ your points are. Most likely, you will not be starting off burning a zillion calories because for beginners, the rallies are not as long because you are more prone to make mistakes. If you would like to make it a tougher workout, (1) play your games to 21 instead of 15, and (2) try to hustle in between points to serve quickly so there’s not a lot of down time.
